And the same calendar runs in reverse. Late summer and autumn, with young mobile and dispersing, is when exclusion is fastest, cleanest, and cheapest. In many jurisdictions this is a period when exclusion cannot lawfully be done at all, because flightless pups are present.
Twenty minutes, from a garden chair, and it's safer and more informative than going into the attic.
Sit where you can see the roof line, starting about half an hour before sunset.
Note the time anything emerges, exactly where, how many — and whether any single animal makes more than one trip.
Out to forage, back to the nest, out again — a distinct pattern from a single animal leaving for the night.
Squirrels are diurnal, so watch early morning instead. Entry is a neat rounded gnawed hole at a roof edge or gable vent.
Raccoons emerge after dusk, heavy and deliberate. Entry is torn — soffits pulled down, vents ripped open.
Bats emerge in a stream at dusk, light and fluttering. Counting the departures gives a colony size estimate, and they cause no structural damage because they use existing gaps.

You may seal an animal inside. It tears at the seal, gnaws new openings, and frequently comes downward into living space looking for another way out.
You may seal a litter inside — the spring and early-summer version, and the worst outcome in this trade.
The damage of getting out exceeds the damage of getting in. An animal that entered through a soffit gap will leave through your ceiling if that's the only route.
And it may be illegal.
Never seal a bat roost while bats are present.
Correct order, always: confirm the structure is empty — including young — then seal.
Relocation is frequently illegal. Rules vary by jurisdiction, but restrictions on transporting and releasing wildlife are common.
Relocation is bad for the animal. Released outside its territory, without knowledge of food, water, or den sites, and competing with established residents, survival rates are poor.
Trapping doesn't solve the building. The entry stays open, and a den site that suited one animal suits the next.
And in spring, trapping a mother is the same failure as sealing. The litter is still in your attic.
The method instead: a one-way device on the primary entry. The animal leaves on its own schedule and can't return. Nobody handles anything, nothing is transported, and it stays in the territory it knows.
Where trapping is genuinely necessary: an animal that won't leave, a situation where a one-way device can't be positioned, an immediate hazard, or an injured or sick animal.
Full inspection first, inside and out — and your dusk watch has frequently already found the primary entry.
Every entry point gets found, because sealing four of five achieves nothing.
Litter check completed, and dealt with before anything else.
Secondary entries sealed first, so the one-way device becomes the only available route.

And scent marking attracts the next animal, so deodorising is part of preventing recurrence.
