Dark spotting. On sheets, mattress seams, the label, headboards, and baseboard edges. On fabric it bleeds slightly at the edges, like ink on paper — that bleeding is the distinguishing feature, and it's the most commonly found evidence in real inspections.
Eggs. About a millimetre, pearly white, cemented into cracks and seams. Resistant to most insecticides, which is why the treatment interval matters.
Odour. Sweet and musty in established infestations. An indicator of scale rather than a diagnostic — if you can smell it, it isn't confined to the mattress.
Any one confirms it. None, after a proper search, is meaningful reassurance — and that's a legitimate reason to stop worrying rather than book anything.

Don't start moving belongings. Bagging clothing and carrying it elsewhere, or relocating furniture, transports insects and seeds harbourage where there wasn't any. Bag things and leave them where they are.
Don't throw out the mattress. Frequently unnecessary, expensive, and carrying it through the building spreads insects down the hallway and stairwell.
And don't spray anything. Retail products rarely reach harbourage, they scatter insects into locations nobody has found, and repeated partial exposure selects for resistance. Foggers are the worst version.
Eggs survive most insecticides. Whatever kills the adults and nymphs present on treatment day generally doesn't kill eggs already laid, and those hatch over the following days and weeks.
The second treatment is the point, not a top-up. Timed to catch newly hatched nymphs after they emerge and before they mature and lay. That interval is set by the species, not by a diary.
Which produces the pattern people misread. Activity drops sharply, then partially returns as eggs hatch — and that's exactly when people conclude it failed and apply a retail product, which scatters the population and expands the scope.
Typically two to four visits for a chemical programme. Heat can achieve elimination in one session, with follow-up inspection rather than follow-up treatment.
And bed bugs survive a long time without feeding — adults in particular can persist for months. Leaving a room empty doesn't work, and an unoccupied apartment can still be infested.
Whole-room heat raises the space to a lethal temperature and holds it long enough to penetrate furniture, mattresses, and voids. Kills every life stage including eggs in one session, and reaches harbourage regardless of whether anyone found it.
